I was driving back home tonight without the radio on and really noticed the amount of rattle/ticking coming from the engine when cruising at 1200rpm in 6th-8th gear. (Auto)
If I put it into Neutral and kept the engine at the same rpm it's really quiet, but I suppose its under no load.
I did try put my foot down and the engine sounds great, just what you would expect but its when you are trundling along at this 1200 rpm zone it seems to be overly noisy.
I know it's a commercial but my wifes Tiguan has the same engine and that's not as noisy although I imagine it has more soundproofing.
    Anyway...is this normal?

Hi Troutman, try searching before posting on the forum! 2014 models have under-bonnet sound insulation, but still no engine acoustic cover, despite the snap-on fixings being present.
See my earlier post "Engine noise reduction" further down for discussion on this subject, it can be cured easily.

I did look at your post and searched for others but you seemed to be talking of noise when pressing the "loud pedal".
Mine is only an issue at 1200rpm ie: very low revs, as I mentioned, "trundling"..
I thought I might have an issue possibly with the gearbox as the noise was gone in neutral at the same revs.

That's why I posted a new thread, as I have driven many VAG diesels and never heard this noise at low revs. As I mentioned my wife has a Tiguan with the same engine although it's a 160hp but it's so quiet at any revs.
By the way my lorry is much quieter than the Amarok.
You mentioned the clips are there for an engine cover, is it possible to fit one from another car eg: Tiguan?

Hi Troutman, that's a question I haven't found the answer to yet unfortunately, so went for the aftermarket solution, which works well, but an OEM VAG cover would look much nicer on a new truck especially. Maybe its possible to cut & shut one from another VW model, but you would need insider knowledge. Mine is pretty quiet on tickover & overrun, and only made the typical "diesel rattle" on throttle (even light throttle).
This is mainlyhigher frequency airborne noise, and I'm happy to say it's virtually gone with the blanket fitted. It might be an idea to have a listen to another 'Rok as a comparison, before approaching your dealer. I'm up in Newcastle if you are anywhere close,or maybe another forum member can help? Best of luck sorting it out.

Do you know if the genuine VW bonnet sound deadening can be bought and added to ones without it.
And also how many arms and legs VW would ask for it.

I didn't get far with looking into the deadening kit for it, I think it was noisy because it was new and the fact that you just get used to it helps. It no longer bothers me at all, the squeaking rear end does though!!
I remember when I bought my T5 in 2006, it had the 5cyl 2.5tdi engine in it and that was very noisy but it was a commercial vehicle and VW, like all motor manufactures are not going to spend a penny/cent more than they have to when building a vehicle when it's main intension is for work.

Do you mean the items 5 & 17 plus fasteners shown on here?

    Part numbers are listed here:

BTW. It's all found or linked from the Technical Reference section of the forum. ;)

If you mean the plastic engine cover found on other VW diesels, then I've not seen an Amarok specific one but someone on [[ Aus Amarok.com Is Infected as of 31/7/2015 - Don't visit the website without having good anti-virus software!! ]], (Crispmods?), has adapted one from another model to fit.

If it was mine to keep for a few years I might consider some sound proofing , however mine is on contract hire and will get replaced in 2years time and I can't make any mods like that to it anyway.
Like I say, the noise issue doesn't bother me at all anymore.
